14 years ago today my sister and I (at the exact time I am writing this) were probably high-fiving for the last time until I crossed the finish line at Vineman Ironman. We were both on our bikes and we saw each other for a brief moment when the bike leg doubled back. She was ahead of me and would stay that way for the rest of the day. She would confidently finish her race and wait for me to celebrate!
We had trained “together” for this race. Meaning that for most of 9 months leading up to the race I was living in CA and she was in MN. So – by the time that I got up in the morning I already had a message from her that she had finished her morning workout. That was always the inspiration I needed to get out and get my workout done. I even remember the day that she ran Grandma’s Marathon I ran 26.2 miles in and around San Francisco just so I wouldn’t miss out!
Today, my sister is in a different race – healing her brain after surgery. It is going to be a long race for her – but it is in her honor that I am setting my sites on another Ironman. While she is spending the next year doing her hard work – I am going to do my hard work to get back into Ironman shape. Now – she will hopefully finish her work in the next 6 – 12 months. I am giving myself 24. I haven’t picked a race yet – but a fall Ironman in 2019 will be perfect! I have learned from my past mistakes and I want to be absolutely ready for my next Ironman. Not wondering how to put on a wetsuit or if I am going to make it past the bike cut off – but confident that I will have an amazing PR.
So – Triathlon Thursday will still be filled with plenty of tips and advice – but will also be filled with thoughts from my own workouts. Hopefully you will continue to tune in and travel with me on this amazing ride called Ironman. A number of things have changed in the last 14 years. What remains constant is my sister is a fighter and one of the most courageous people I know. Can’t wait to do some “training” with her and this time I will have to get up first in MN and she can follow in CA.
