I have always associated the 5 second Rule with something that has been dropped on the floor – you always had “5 Seconds” to eat it before it would be contaminated with germs. (By the way that myth has been debunked by Myth Busters – it does not matter how long it sits on the floor – as it will pick up the same amount of germs in 1 second as it will in 5 or even 10).
Right? Anything you drop on the floor you can pick it up and eat it within 5 seconds. Everybody knows that!
So – why did Mel Robbins do a Tedx Talk about the 5 Second Rule? The bigger question is – WHY didn’t HER 5 Second Rule come into my life sooner?
Stay with me here – we have ALL had those moments where we have had big plans and then think better of it. Right?
- I am setting my alarm for 5am to go to spin class. 5am rolls around and you reset your alarm for 6am.
- I am going to pitch a new idea to my boss the next time I see her. And the “timing” is never right.
- I am ABSOLUTELY going to cut back on salt. And then happy hour rolls around and those French Fries are irresistible.
Wouldn’t it be great if there were a technique to help us through these situations? Wouldn’t it be great if we could always make the “right” choice?
Welcome, Mel Robbins and the 5 Second Rule.
5 seconds? That is all it takes? Yep – and when I heard was listening to her podcast with Lewis Howes I was SUPER skeptical. 5 seconds? What? Count back from 5-4-3-2-1 GO! That’s it. That is her tip. That is what made her SO successful. That is what will make ALL of us successful. And the beauty in 5-4-3-2-1 GO is that it works!!!!
Seriously! She preaches (and there is a BUNCH of science behind her – ask Sara of the Habit Gal!) that 5 seconds can change your life. You have an idea – you have a plan – so don’t let your emotions get in the way. When you make a decision to do something count backward 5-4-3-2-1 and then do it! Don’t think – just go for it! If you hesitate your emotions take over and they will stop you. Again – lots of science behind it and I will let you check out Mel Robbins to understand the whys. All I know is that it works.
I have been using the 5 Second Rule for the past two weeks and here are my results:
• I have not missed an enjoyout (6 days a week)
• I have meditated for 15 minutes every morning for the past 2 weeks
• I have moved my business further in 2 weeks than in the last 2 months
All I am saying is – try it. Read more about it – do the research on the science – do what you need. But, just do it. Nike wasn’t wrong. Take a deep breath. Count backwards from 5. When you get to 1 just GO!
Let me know your thoughts! Has it worked for you? Have you shortened it to the 3 Second Rule? What positive things have happened in your life since you started using it?
Move your body, put good things in and ENJOY every day!
