Burpees! Burpees? WHAT? Yes …. BURPEES. Have you ever tried them and yelled “Woo Hoo” with a smile at the top of the burpee? Try it. Just try it. Once. For me. Smile while doing a burpee. It works. The burpees seems easier and you feel good about it.
And – do you know why? Once the smiling muscles in our face contract, there is a positive feedback loop that now goes back to the brain and reinforces our feeling of joy. Smiling then, seems to give us the same happiness that exercising induces terms of how our brain responds. In short: our brain feels good and tells us to smile, we smile and tell our brain it feels good and so forth.
This reminds me of a girl (way back we were girls) in high school who was always smiling – much like my cousin, Angie. This girl – and gosh, I wish I could remember her name. She was a Xcountry runner and skier – and was ALWAYS smiling. She smiled through even the toughest enjoyouts. Now – I don’t know if she had read the research – but I am guessing she hadn’t. She just knew that smiling made her happy – and smiling while racing made her win.
There is SO much research about this and I was raised that facts matter and they do – but what also matters is how you feel. What matters is that smiling works – in LOTS of different ways. Go – smile – and enjoy every day!
